A Sailor's Log is Petty Officer Wilson's record of this cruise; his assignment on the Asiatic Station, including stops at Nagasaki, Kure, Japan, Woosung, China, Shanghai, and Hong Kong; and his return to the United States in September 1901. Wilson offers a rare uncensored picture of enlisted life, with descriptions of bar girls and waterfront establishments that catered to the needs of American bluejackets, as well as observations on world events during imperialism. Wilson also discusses one of the great yet largely ignored issues of the turn-of-the-century U.S. Navy; the failure of naval officers to provide the quality leadership necessary to ensure the operation of efficient, effective warships. About the Author
Ronald Turnbull is an all-weather walker, writer and photographer based in Southern Scotland. His special interest is in multi-day backpack trips over rough country, and he has completed 19 different coast-to-coast journeys across various parts of the UK. He has achieved comfortable nights without tent on over 50 UK hilltops and in three Lake District caves. He also enjoys hut-to-hut across hot, rocky and preferably Spanish-speaking bits of Europe. He has won the Outdoor Writers' Guild Award for Excellence in three separate categories: for a series of articles in Lakeland Walker magazine (2005); for a Guidebook, to the Coast to Coast Walk (1999); and for an Outdoor Book, the Cicerone-published Book of the Bivvy (2002). In 1994 he won the Fell Running Association's Long-distance Trophy for a 10-day run over all the hills of Southern Scotland. Turnbull is ultimately worth reading, not just because of the clever quirkiness of his thoughts and phrases but because his night yomps and his high bivvies and his off-beat, off-beaten-track jaunts show that he retains that most basic of outdoor-writer essentials: a simple love of being out there, somewhere, on the surface of the planet. I have to pick my way through the stories for the good stuff..

If you are a Brit, you'll be able to understand the jargon used by the author in his stories, but for this American, even though I lived for 4 years in England, I cannot begin to understand most of the foods he refers to, nor many of the nouns used to describe a variety of things . In many instances, I was unable to follow or understand some sentences at all. It is a wake-up to how different British English is from American English.

On the plus side, he details bivy stories both good and bad giving the reader a clearer idea of what using a bivy is about. There are interesting bits between the stories where he discusses the pros an cons of various aspects of bivy use.

A final thought: he's doing what I enjoy doing, so the book was pretty interesting overall, despite the difficult to understand bits.

The price is right.

This book is very entertaining and allows you to learn from someone else's mistakes without getting wet. The big lessons are between the lines, but even a quick read will help you decide if "bagging' it" is for you.

Loved the humor. Loved the practical advice. Ronald doesn't make apologies for a bivy's perceived weaknesses instead he shows how he is able to get more enjoyment from walking using a bivy. It might work for me too. Happy bivying.

Finally---a much needed tool for the industry!

In over 30 years of reading about food safety, until I bought this book, I had never read a 'how-to" book on implementing a food safety program at the retail level that was so thorough, yet concise. From selecting a food safety team, to develping systems, to training, execution, verification and gap analysis, the book logically and comprehensively adresses the necessary steps to developing (or enhancing) a food safety program. Dr. King's unique background in regulatory, academia and industry is evidenced in his writing. Driven by his desire to promote and protect public health, he is able to apply his research and knowledge in infectious disease with his thorough understanding of the business realities of a retail food company. This book should be an invaluable tool in guiding both the company initiating a food safety program, or one who is interested in strengthening their existing program.

It detailed out the various steps required to set up and manage a successful Food Safety program to protect your brand name and ensure a steady growth in your return on investment. Measures in this book will not only help the food industry stay in compliance with the relevant Local, State and FDA Food Codes, but will also help to maintain a lower operational cost in the long term, while protecting your business and the Public Health from the devastating impact of food-borne diseases. As a Public Health Professional, I recommend this book to all those interested in curtailing/eliminating the avoidable negative effects of rampant disease epidemic outbreaks associated with food here in the United States and around the world. Excellent how-to book

Dr. King is a first-rate scientist who has provided an excellent look at how to get a food safety system running in a retail food business. Hal had first-hand experience in the restaurants before going to college and then developed a scientific / academic and public health career that was admirable. He then took that knowledge base and applied it back into protecting both public health and putting systems and policies in place to give the restaurant associates the tools they need to protect their customers. The book is a great read for anyone getting into food safety management, either in manufacturing or retail food protection.
