Veronica Heley just makes Bea Abbot more and more interesting even though she "doesn't do murder" (tongue in cheek)

The Abbot Agency series just gets better and better. I enjoyed this book enormously, the main characters get more rounded out and the who-done-it in this mystery was really a surprise. Sir Lucas was most believable, I loved te fact that he could be absolutely wrong! I love Bea, she is a little younger than I am and certainly wealthier but she still is a down home woman with a strong sense of turning lost sheep into family members. She has a marvelously interesting ex-husband but has no illusions about his strengths and weakesses. I missed reading more of him in this book. I truly wish she could give her son some backbone and a stronger sense of morality ... or is it less selfishness that he needs? I don't find him charming just surly or is his mum just blind to his faults? It seems so. I love the descriptions of the flats and the Abbott house because they remind me of my visits of England. My only regret is that I anxiously await the next book, I read it, but then it's over all too soon. I truly wish I could stretch each book out a little longer because I love the suspense and the characters. I sure hope there is an Ellie Quicke on the front burner so I can continue to have another "Veronica Heley" to read very soon. By the way, what happened to real quotation marks, have they become passe?

False Alarm

Bea Abbot is worried about Maggie who lives with her and runs her own property development business. Maggie has been summoned by her mother, Lady Ossett, because her husband, Sir Lucas, has moved out. Bea doesn't think it would be good for Maggie to give up her job - especially as she doesn't get on well with her mother. When Sir Lucas asks Bea to find out what is going on in the block of flats where Lady O lives Bea finds herself more involved than she really cares to be.

This is a well written `cosy' mystery with that little something extra. The characters are well drawn and they develop throughout the series. There is Bea herself, running a successful domestic agency, Maggie - who lives in the same house, Oliver who is away at university but who features in this story as he is home for the Christmas holiday. There is Winston, the cat with attitude and Bea's ex-husband, portrait painter Piers.

I enjoy this series because it is firmly founded in the everyday problems of feeding a family, shopping and making sure a business runs smoothly while trying to solve a mystery and be all things to everyone. Bea is far from being a perfect person and she speaks her mind when necessary as well as putting the phone down on people when they annoy her.

Love the Abbott Agency series by Heley! This is a great additon letting us in on more of our favorite characters lives. Bea's insights of everyones actions is always on the money,and sticking to her moral compass when others fail is refreshing. Love Heley's plots and characters!

General William V. Judson was Military Attache and Chief of the American Military Mission in Russia at the time of the Bolshevik Revolution. His letters, memoranda, and reports constitute one of the most informed eye-witness accounts of war and revolutionary conditions under the Provisional and Bolshevik Governments of Russia after the February Uprising and abdication of Czar Nicholas II, and shed light on the initiation of U.S. ?Soviet relation. Judson's overriding task was to keep Russia in the war against Germany. His official communications pay particular attention to the organization and battle-readiness of the Russian Army. Published here for the first time is Judson?s documentation of his December 1, 1917, meeting with Trotsky, the first official face-to-face discussions between a leader of the Bolshevik government and a diplomatic representative of the U.S. government. Notable as well in this volume are Judson?s analyses of the role of the Soviet of Workers? Deputies and the Kornilov Uprising. The collection concludes with some of his observations on revolutionary Russia and U.S.- Soviet relations after his return to the States in February 1918. Judson was convinced of the necessity of direct discussions and negotiations between the U.S. and the Trotsky-Lenin government following the Revolution. However, President Wilson and the three republican administrations that succeeded him chose a different course. The publication of these papers will contribute to our understanding of both the Revolution and the American struggle to find an appropriate policy to guide relations with Bolshevik Russia.

Riveting first-hand account of Boshevik Revolution.

There are many acounts of the Bolshevik revolution. There are even quite of few first-hand accounts. But there are precious few first-hand accounts by Americans, fewer still by Americans impartial to the Boshevik cause. This is one.
William Judson, a US military attache to Russia at the outbreak of revolution writes vivid and candid acounts of events unfolding and offers his opinion of how these events impinge on the interests of the United States -- such was his responsibility: to report to the US government. Salzman, the editor of these papers, did an admirable job selecting, editing and, best yet, setting the accounts in context as both events and Judson's life progress. A good read.

Seen by many people as slimy and nasty, this book will make you understand them better, if not an eel fancier.

An informative book about a creature that most Americans seem to regard as slimy and nasty. We have forgotten that eels were once common fare for our colonial ancestors, until many thousands of dams (for mills and other purposes) blocked migration. This book is excellently illustrated.

The book covers only American and European eels (there aren't many books on eels, so I have no knowledge about Pacific eels). Schweid brings in natural history but perhaps more, the eel as food and subject in literature and art (think of those Dutch still lifes featuring game and fish), and in culture. That may seem like a joke, the eel in culture, but read the book and you'll see it perhaps more seriously.

Eels seem to be in trouble. They are in some ways still a bit mysterious. Readers with some background may remember that for a very long time no one knew where eels went when they migrated out to sea. One issue I was unaware of is the sale of glass eels (baby eels coming into fresh water) to Chinese eel farms. Eels have not been successfully raised from eggs.
