A virtual Duchamp industry has arisen over the last decade or so, as the chameleonlike art provocateur has been canonized as a primal postmodern. While there are plenty of explications of his oeuvre available (Thierry De Duve's philosophical explorations being among the best), this sumptuous, illustration- packed study is one of the most systematic and clear, if not the most comprehensive. Ram rez, a professor of art history at the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, devotes nearly the entire book to what he sees as Duchamp's major works: The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (hence the book's subtitle) and Etant Donn es (a work Duchamp spent the last 30 years of his career planning and assembling), carefully analyzing each component of their complicated "mechanisms." He finds a plethora of sources in popular material and print culture for them both--the first, a sort of flattened mobile structure captured between two panes of (now cracked) glass; the second, a notorious macabre peep show-like installation. These sources are reproduced on nearly every page, along with details of the works themselves. Ram rez's tight focus will not suit readers seeking an overview of the career or life, and his somewhat clinical presentation will turn off others. But those looking for a way into the intricacies of two arguable masterpieces of 20th-century art will find few better avenues than this meticulous and devoted study.

a thorough and helpful analysis

The Publisher's Weekly review doesn't accurately give readers the flavor of this excellent book. Ramirez's is the only discussion of Etant Donnes I've encountered which accounts for a full range of interpretations of the work (including the one the Publisher's Weekly reviewer holds). Ramirez places Duchamp and his work (not just Large Glass and Etant Donnes) in historical and cultural context, connects the artist and the work with other artists and with popular culture of the time, and provides many details and illustrations which give readers an idea of how these pieces developed. The writing/translating style is direct and unpretentious, yet interesting and enjoyable to read. The research quality is high. The book is well-produced, and the number and quality of illustrations are very good. Overall, it is so thorough and helpful an addition to writings on Duchamp as to be nearly indispensable. Notes: 1) This book does not appear in an amazon.com search for "Marcel Duchamp," only for "Duchamp." 2) The complete title is "Duchamp: Love and Death, Even." 3) If you are looking for other writing by this author, the books are in Spanish and the last name is spelled "Ramairez" in Amazon's search results.

Kapitel 2 geht außerdem allgemein auf die Bedeutung des Partisanenkampfes für die sogenannte konventionelle Kriegsführung ein und gewährt einen Überblick über die historische Entstehung und Entwicklung des Phänomens der asymmetrischen Kriegsführung.

Bevor in Kapitel 4 die wissenschaftliche Erörterung in Bezug auf den Partisanenkrieg der Wehrmacht in Russland einsetzt, soll im dritten Abschnitt ein Forchungsbericht verschiedene Positionen und Ansätze bezüglich dieses Themas herausarbeiten und dabei auch auf die nötige Vorsicht vor der sowjetischen Historiographie hinweisen, die dem Thema zwar einen großen Stellenwert beimisst, jedoch mehr in propagandistischem Sinne argumentiert und den Partisanenkrieg krampfhaft in die Lehre des historischen Materialismus einzuordnen versucht.

Damit entzieht sie einer objektiven Annäherung an den Sachverhalt von vornherein jede Grundlage.
Der westliche Historiker steht in vielen Fällen vor der Problematik, seine Untersuchung im Regelfall einseitig auf eine deutsche Quellenbasis stützen zu müssen. Dies gilt auch für den überwiegenden Teil der einschlägigen Forschungsliteratur, selbst Armstrongs Standardwerk „Soviet Partisans in World War II" stellt dabei keine Ausnahme dar.
