The meliponines, stingless honey-making bees, encircle the tropical world and penetrate every forest there. This book brings together and synthesizes, on a global scale and for the first time, information on these bees as honey producers and natural alchemists. Their ability to store their food in flexible cerumen pots made from wax and resin enables them to produce honey for which the world has no other source. These little known and often rare denizens of remote reaches of the globe have found a way to produce honey and survive in the permanently wet and unforgiving rain forests, since before the continents of Africa and South America split apart 100 million years ago. In Australia, we find them equipped to survive in cold deserts, and in the Amazon some feed within the nests of other social bees, utilize flesh of dead animals, or even live among scale bugs that give them food and building material. Some are obligate parasites, stealing the brood food from inside nests of other meliponines. Pot-honey is a minor honey in the market but a major honey in the forest, produced by many hundreds of flowering plants and demanding integrated conservation. Complementing the unifloral honeys of "Apis mellifera," many more pot-honeys are yet to be appreciated by the public. The analytical corpus developed to study and standardize honey produced in combs is also valid for pot-honey. Honey ferments inside the nests of Meliponini, and the process continues after harvest. According to "A. mellifera "standards it is spoiled, yet a more medicinal product results and may remodel our concept of honey. As shown here, the meliponines, support a legacy of bees interacting with human culture, traditions, art, science and philosophy. "

The Definitive Reference on Stingless Bees

This massive volume presents a wealth of new information (contributed by 81 experts from 23 different countries) about the fascinating stingless bees of the world.

Stingless bees have more than 500 species across the globe and the immense variety in their nests and behavior is detailed in this book. The history of stingless bee keeping is also explored, including the medicinal use of stingless bee honey by the ancient Maya and a 1557 account of stingless bee hunting in Brazil.

As a bee enthusiast and an Australian resident, I am pleased to see a major chapter devoted to the Australian stingless bees. The authors explore how stingless bees survive in the Australian outback desert, and the unusual fighting swarm and seed dispersal activities of some Australian species.

Plants used by stingless bees are also treated in detail, with chapters on pollen analysis and lists of plant species important for stingless bees in different countries.

The major focus of the book is on stingless bee honey which the book's editors have called "pot-honey". Sixteen chapters are devoted to the characteristics of stingless bee honey worldwide, its medicinal properties and issues regarding the marketing of this unique product.

The aromatic honey of this major group of bees has received surprisingly little exposure in the global marketplace so far. It is to be hoped that the detailed information contained in these chapters will help to redress this situation.

It is a shame that the book's title, "Pot-honey", is rather obscure. This phrase refers to the way stingless bees store their honey in small pots. Unfortunately, in my view this title does not clearly indicate that this book is about stingless bees and will result in many potential readers passing it by.

"Pot-Honey: A legacy of stingless bees" is a must-have volume for researchers, environmentalists, honey marketers and students interested in an up-to-date and a thorough treatment of the world's stingless bee species.

As a result, axotomized motoneurons become hyperexcitable and unable to discharge. Since the improvement of growth cone navigation and the reduction of the ephaptic cross-talk between axons both turn out be impossible at present, the authors focused their efforts on the third detrimental component and proposed that an intensification of the trigeminal input to the axotomized and electrophysiologically silent facial motoneurons might improve the specificity of reinnervation. To test their hypothesis, they compared behavioral, electrophysiological and morphological parameters after single reconstructive surgery on the facial nerve (or its buccal branch) with those obtained after identical facial nerve surgery but combined with indirect (removal of the contralateral infraorbital nerve, ION) or direct (massage of the mimic muscles) stimulation of the ipsilateral ION. They found that in all cases any trigeminal stimulation was beneficial for the outcome by improving both the quality of target reinnervation (reduced polyinnervation of the motor endplates) and the recovery of vibrissal motor performance (as judged by video-based motion analysis). Based on these results, the authors conclude that trigeminal stimulation is a non-invasive procedure with immediate potential for clinical rehabilitation following facial nerve reconstruction.

Time to Replace a Tattered Copy

I have and do teach general SEI education in the intermediate grades of urban schools. I bought this book two years ago and have carried it around the classroom so much that I now need to buy a new one. The book outlines concise theoretical explanations and provides very practical instructions for implementing critical literacy in the classroom. I use the techniques frequently during guided reading and also during whole group instructions - with the basal and with literature. Learning to think about text from a critical literacy perspective, my students have consistently grown beyond what is expected of them in the area of reading comprehension. As a result, their outstanding standardized test results have attracted the admiration of my superiors and have allowed me more autonomy to teach how I think best. I highly recommend this book to those teachers who share my experience with high-pressure testing environments in the urban classroom. Learning critical literacy will arm your students against the "hidden curriculum" they will continue to be exposed to in school, and will intensely spark their intellectualism.

Critical, but Useful

I found that the first part of the book where the authors discussed the theory was very abrasive and it turned me off. I probably would not have continued to read the book if it was not an assignment for a graduate class. I ended up taking my own critical stance on a lot of what was said and thinking about how much of the book I wanted to take seriously.

However, when I got to the sections with real lessons as carried out by individual teachers, I thought that the lessons were more practical and useful. I like the children's literature titles that the authors suggest using and found the critical literacy lessons applicable to my students' lives and interests.

Overall, I'd recommend skipping the first part of this book for the teacher who values thinking critically and wants lesson ideas.
