A bit of romance, and a lot of death...
By John P. Jones III
...equals "for never was a story of more woe, than this of Juliet and her Romeo," as Shakespeare concludes.
I've recently undertaken a project to read if not all of Shakespeare, at least a significant portion. Like many others, I have not read one of the most preeminent, if not the most, authors of the English language since high school. How and why that is a normal outcome of the standard educational process is "beyond the scope of this review," to quote a bit of jargon from my school days. I started with two plays I had read in high school, the classical works, Hamlet and Macbeth (Folger Shakespeare Library). High drama, insights into the human condition, certainly of those seeking power (as well as avoiding that pursuit!), some familiar quotes that still resonate over time, and a lot of death (like one of those "action" movies.) Therefore, decided I needed a "change of pace," Shakespeare-wise, and read a play I had never read before, a "romance," and a play so famous that the principal characters are often co-opted by the popular culture as a metaphor for romance. What I found out however, was that the play had a lot in common with the other two, specifically, a "lot of death," and hence the "woe" that Shakespeare concludes with.
There are two clans in Verona, Italy that have been carrying on a feud that has spanned several generations. Romeo belongs to the first clan, the Montague. Juliet belongs to the other clan, the Capulet. In the best tradition of "make love, not war", they decide to bridge that gap, though infatuation might be the more operative word than "love," since they have barely had the time to get to know one another. And, oh, in today's world, Romeo could be up for criminal charges, since Juliet has just turned 14. But "kids" did seem to grow up quicker in that pre-electronic age. In particular, what I did not know was the rather ingenious turn in the plot, inspired by a "good" monk, which was to have them escape the constraints of the warring clans - and a turn that would backfire on these youthful lovers - big time.
A few notable quotes: "And she steals love's sweet bait from fearful hooks." The rather famous: "What's in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet." One that has inspired some delightful (at times) coquettish behavior: "Or if thou thinkest I am too quickly won, I'll frown and be perverse, and say thee nay." And: "parting is such sweet sorrow." Regrets of parenting: "That God had lent us but this only child; But now I see this one is one too much, and that we have a curse in having her." On the chances of long-term marital bliss: "She's not well married that lives married long, But she's best married that dies married young."
Despite all the death, and other unpleasantness, a worthwhile 5-star read.

A poor, bare bones edition.
By B. Marold
This review review is directed entirely at the Kindle edition by an unknown publishing house, Waskeep Publishing. It's cover has a passing similarity to Penguin editions of Shakespeare's plays, but that is where the resemblance stops. The volume has NOTHING except the bare play, and an active table of contents. There is no introduction and there are no notes. Virtually every Shakespearean play by Penguin, Oxford, and Modern Library has all these things, plus line numbers to track lines across various printings. What is worse is that in some cases, the name to indicate who is speaking is ambiguous, as when it says "Friar". There are two friars in the play, Friar Lawrence and Friar John. You cannot tell the difference between the two, except when they first enter a scene. There is a much better Kindle edition as part of the Yale University editions of Shakespeare, with full annotations, an introductory essay, and a concluding essay by Harold Bloom. It also has the line numbers to compare editions. You will be much happier with that edition than this, which is, quite honestly, even hard to read, with its gaping empty spaces.
