About the Author
Dr. Frank Thomas is Professor of Counseling and Counselor Education, College of Education, Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, Texas USA. His books include Masters of Narrative and Collaborative Therapies: The Voices of Andersen, Anderson, and White (edited with Tapio Malinen and Scot J. Cooper, 2011), the Handbook of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy: Clinical Applications (edited with Thorana Nelson, 2007), Tales from Family Therapy: Life-Changing Clinical Experiences (also edited with Thorana Nelson, 1998), and Competency Based Counseling: Building on Client Strengths (authored with Jack Cockburn, 1998). He has authored over 80 articles and book chapters and has presented over 200 workshops in 13 different countries. A licensed marriage and family therapist, Frank is on the editorial boards of several international journals. He is a sensei (teacher) at Mizu Aikido dojo in Fort Worth and an internationally-published amateur photographer.

Useful, practiced-tested ideas for supervisors

I just finished a careful reading of this new book on supervision. I call it a careful reading because I found myself making lots of notes about useful ideas and practices I can adopt in work with my supervisees and mentees. I appreciate how the book blends Insoo Kim Berg's thinking, existing research, and the author's practice-based reflections on supervision. The book credits Berg's (and Steve de Shazer's) work, yet looks beyond and forward to a broader--but still solution-focused inspired-- approach to supervision that can be employed with all practitioners no matter their preferred model. I think this book is a major contribution to the solution-focused literature and the supervision literature in general. I'm already doing some things differently in my own supervision work based on it. Thanks to the author for all the hard work put into this project! I can imagine the book is already getting lots of well-deserved, positive comments from its readers.

Solution Focused Supervision

So,that is where I started, chapter 4. What a treat, and I say treat because, as I read, I kept fantasizing about chocolate, cappuccino and a few of my favorite steak houses, those really high end places. The first awareness I had, was of the organization of the book. The first major section of chapter 4, is 4.1 Goal setting: Active, Responsive Goal Creation and Assessment, and of course, the subsection to that is, 4.1.1 Responsive with Supervision; 4.1.2 Interactive. You see how easily this book is going to read. In that section is a table. I usually skip over tables and graphs. Not so here. They actually aid in the understanding. I looked elsewhere in the book, especially the part of on systems thinking and tables there are helpful as well. I became convinced that Dr. Thomas followed the advice he solicited from Brian Cade for how to write the book: Write it using straight-forward language; keep it practical and focused on pragmatics; avoid evangelising; and try not to mention Wittgenstein or any other philosophers. I believe he accomplished the task. You see this process played out in the rest of the book - dare I say, it morphs. OK, that was my first bite, the organization of the book. Dr. Thomas is also known for making the ideas of others' clearer. Also true in this book. But his own ideas are everywhere and quite clear also. OK, second bite, clarity. He makes a statement or presents an idea, and then gives an example. Those of you who have written a Philosophy of Supervision paper as part of the requirements for the Designation: AAMFT Approved Supervisor, will love how this flows. This sets a flow for the book which becomes almost rhythmic and you begin to anticipate with some pleasure what is to come. I have managed not to talk about chocolate so far, and the steak houses, but I must say this. The measure for me of good cuisine and of course good grog (India Pale Ale here), is that the first bite is "divinity." And if the last bite is in your estimation as good as the first, well, then you have stumbled on something you want to share with others. Brian Cade said, don't evagelise (his spelling ;-) ) but I can't help it. I have been supervising since shortly after I got licensed (1982). I dream, or think of books that ought to be written. Dr. Thomas has written it. My dream book is here. It has everything in it, and you can go to the Table of Contents and verify. The nuts and bolts for beginning a relationship with a therapist in a supervisory capacity is there, and then developing it. And there are tables and graphs which makes sense. And then the aesthetics of the relationship are well thought out and presented in a way that feed what I call the "essence" of a therapist. Some of the traits a good therapist has aren't teachable, but can be developed. You get that here!! Because it is actually all the things you want in an excellent text, it isn't one you find on a library shelf. It will go with you. It goes with me as a great reference. You should also buy stock in Sharpie, if you are a user. I went through a few already. Now I must change colors. Get my drift. This book, by Dr. Thomas is an unforgettable contribution to the field of supervision as a whole, and, solution focused supervision specifically. Thumbs up and 5 stars from an AAMFT Approved Supervisor. The Systems thing, yes, we get it all. It's spendy and worth it!!
