A noble effort.....

As a long-suffering sapphire crystal grower, I looked forward to this volume as a significant update to the only prior compendium of sapphire knowledge (Ruby and Sapphire, L. M. Belyaev, ed. 1974). The authors have done yeoman service in pulling together a wide variety of information, however the execution appears to have fallen somewhat short. Lapses in editting are distressingly frequent, and the index is far from comprehensive. It is disappointing that the publishers could not appoint an editor who was equal to the task of refining the often quixotic translations of terms and ideas from the authors' native tongue to more standard English. While this is admittedly difficult, it is not impossible. (The writer speaks from personal experience of helping a former colleague, V. A. Tatarchenko, prepare a paper for publication.) The section(s) in which the authors advance their somewhat unorthodox notions regarding the existence of "pre-organized" crystallites in the melt and their subsequent arrangement into the solid, bulk crystal would have especially benefitted from some regularizing of terminology.
Sapphire's technological significance is not widely recognized in the everyday world (believe it!), and it is at times (nay, frequently) a maddening material to work with. This book is a necessary, but not entirely sufficient, addition to the library of anyone working in the field. So, while I say 'Shame on Springer' for what appears to be a rush to publish, I say 'Bravo!' to the authors for their...noble effort.
