Camel (Animal), by Robert Irwin

A distinct symbol of the desert and the Middle East, the camel was once unkindly described as ‘half snake, half folding bedstead’. But in the eyes of many the camel is a creature of great beauty. This is most evident in the Arab world, where the camel has played a central role in the historical development of Arabic society. Beauty pageants are still held for camels in some Arabic countries, and an elaborate vocabulary and extensive literature have been devoted to them.
In Camel, Robert Irwin explores why the camel has fascinated so many cultures, including those in places where camels are not indigenous. He traces the history of the camel from its origins millions of years ago to the present day, discussing such matters of contemporary concern as the plight of camel herders in the Sudan’s war-torn Darfur region, the alarming increase in the population of feral camels in Australia, and the endangered status of the wild Bactrian in Mongolia and China. Throughout history, the camel has been appreciated worldwide for its practicality, resilience and legendary abilities of survival. It has been featured in the works of Leonardo da Vinci, Poussin, Tiepolo, Flaubert, Kipling and Rose Macaulay, among others. From East to West, Irwin’s Camel is the first survey of its kind to examine the animal’s role in society and history throughout the world.
Not just for camel aficionados, this highly illustrated book is sure to entertain and inform anyone interested in this fascinating and exotic animal.

Review
"In [Camel] Irwin has crammed an astonishing amount of information about dromedaries (camels with a single hump) and Bactrians (camels with two). He writes in snappy sentences, gleefully machine-gunning the reader with facts and anecdotes, delivered with an undertone of dry wit. . . . Irwin writes brilliantly about camels in art and literature, unearthing them everywhere from Madame Bovary to Ishtar."–Guardian

(Guardian)

"This year's surprise must-read even on this unsandy island. A wry history of a mainstay of Arabic civilisation, it examines the animal's cultural, financial and linguistic contribution to the world as we know it."–Independent on Sunday

(Independent (UK))

“Robert Irwin’s quizzical investigation of the Camel (one hump and two) . . . will appeal even to those who would never normally pick up a book on the natural world.”

(Mary Beard Guardian)

You want to learn about Camel's? Here's the book for you!
By Rustys Mama
We know, there are two kinds of Camels; "Dromedary" and "Bactrian". But how do you tell them apart? Easy... think of it this way: "Dromedary" = "D" = "One Hump"... "Bactrain" = "B" = Two humps! This and many other, {what I feel is} fascinating facts about a beautiful.. and yes I did say, BEAUTIFUL beast. Along with my beloved, Canines, and Bat's, Camels are right up there, in my heart. Best of all, Camels have a taste for music! So with that known, how could you not love this misunderstood creature? "Camel" by Robert Irwin is my latest adventure in reading. Thanks to Robert Irwin's wonderful, informative book, I learned, sadly, that it has been estimated that during the First World War; 22,812 camels were killed on active service. A monument is placed on London's Victoria Embarkment in 1921, commemorates the human members of the Camel Corps who died in the First World War. Being a Veteran, myself, this fact, truly, made me cry.
And, did you also know [this fact, Thanks to Mr. Irwin} Approximately 60 per cent of the worlds Camel population is found in East AFRICA. There are between 300,000 and 450,000 camels in India. In the 1920's, with the increased use of motorized transport in Australia, camel herds worth thousands of pounds quite suddenly became worthless and many were turned out into the wild. In 1925 the State of South Australia passed the "Camel Destruction Act", which authorized the police to SHOOT any camel ground trespassing or lacking registration disks. In Mongolia and China the wild Bactrians, the only wild camels in the world, are under threat of extinction. There are perhaps as few as 650 in China and 450 in Mongolia.

Final: "In the Middle Ages camels were the symbol of many things, among them humility, avarice, lust and steadfastness. Today their image is used to peddle a brand of cigarettes. They also feature as a handy shorthand icon for the Arab Middle East, though not all Arabs are happy to be represented by this image, as some see it as implying cultural backwardness. In bookshops the shelves devote to natural history are currently crowded with books about cats, dogs horses, tigers and whales, but not camels. Hence this book" - Robert Irwin.

I say THANK YOU, Robert Iriwn, not only for a wonderful look at such misunderstood, BEAUTIFUL creatures, but an insight on the possible EXTINCTION of this grand animal! I could not have known any of this, without reading "Camel" by Robert Irwin!

Just a hump in the road.
By lyndonbrecht
Another solid and interesting book from the "Animal" series. It is very well illustrated and full of information. The information sometimes consists of eclectic nuggets of odd sorts, such as the lively feral population of camels in Australia. There is a general background on camels from origins to the present day. Camels once were of huge importance in war and commerce, although Japanese light trucks appear to have replaced them. There are few remaining wild camels

Some of the content seems a bit unnecessary. Do we really need a vocabulary of all the Arabic words for camel (it's a little like the rumored huge Inuit--formerly Eskimo--vocabulary for forms of snow). The section on literature and art reflecting camels is perhaps a little longer than it needs to be to make the point, although knowing that artists as divergent as Da Vinci and Flaubert considered camels is oddly satisfying.

Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder. Had King Edward's sturdy Welsh archers been mounted on camels, there might be a Shakespeare play about them. The animal appears to be gawky and awkward to we Westerners. But the book mentions camel beauty pageants, so perhaps there is some Middle Eastern version of the cat fancy, except about camels.

Enjoyable, especially after the first 2 chapters
By Juan C. Larach
I don't believe the first two chapters were written by Irwin. They are dry and without fluidity. So not Irwin. I almost left the book during those two chapters. Fortunately, Irwin appeared in full style after that and made the rest a reading pleasure.
