Margaret Nutting Ralph is Secretary of Educational Ministries for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lexington, Kentucky, and director of two master's degree programs at Lexington Theological Seminary. She is author of "And God Said What?", Plain Words About Biblical Images and the Discovering the Living Word Series, all published by Paulist Press.

Don't leave this book behind!

If you read the Left Behind series (and even if you don't) read this book. I do have to correct what was written in the synopsis on this site: "Margaret Nutting Ralph attempts to correct what she claims are misinterpretations and misreadings of Scriptures that deal with the end of the world". NO, it's not what SHE claims are misinterpretations. Please remember that she is teaching a contextualist way to read scripture. This is not something she invented. This is what the Catholic Church teaches. If you pick up a copy of the study edition of the New American Bible, you will find the same viewpoint. You'll also find it in the JErome Biblical Commentary. Also if you read the books by Raymond Brown.

Better Understanding the Bible - Not Just the End Times

While the title of this book would lead you to think this is a book about "end times," that would be misleading. This is a thoughtfully and inspiringly written account of how to understand the Bible. We are using this as a study/discussion guide for a Bible Study class at our parish and are getting much out of it. As a life-long Catholic and avid reader, I only wish that I had found or been led to this book years ago.

A book that I wish I'd read decades ago.

A great approach to understanding the diverse literary forms of scripture and the impossibility of having a authentic grasp of ancient documents without having an understanding of the cultural forms of that time. As Dr. Nutting points out in many ways, the text is for Jews and assumes the context of their culture and its history, using that background to convey a message otherwise not apparent. Dismissing this context leads to ridiculous speculations--understandable in our ignorance--that are quite misleading. For instance, with the book of Revelation, John is writing to a suffering and persecuted community to convey to them the hope that is a gift of their faith. He is not talking of a future veiled beyond any real understanding, a vague promise, but the reality of the One they know in Christ, always present and always uplifting. Incredible gift of a book!
