Fire has been an integral feature of our planet for over 400 million years. It has defined human culture from the beginning; it is something without which we cannot survive. While among the most destructive forces on Earth, fire displays equally tremendous powers of cleansing and renewal.
Whether hunting, foraging, farming, herding, building towns or managing nature reserves, fire has been at the core of most human endeavours. With the means to make fire, as origin myths attest, humanity diverged from the rest of creation, and began reshaping the world for its own benefit. Aboriginal societies relied on the control of ignition alone; agricultural societies added control over fuel. Over the past 200 years, however, humanity has found a massive new world of combustibles in the form of fossil biomass and with new combustion practices has radically changed the world’s ecological balance. Throughout history, we have mastered the science and art of fire, but there have been many culturally defining fire disasters going back to antiquity.
In Fire Stephen J. Pyne offers a succinct survey of fire’s long coevolution with humanity. It examines fire’s influence on landscapes, art, science and, in recent times, climate. Fire is richly illustrated with images rarely reproduced or not seen before in the context of fire. It will appeal to general readers curious to understand fire beyond what is seen in the media, and to fire specialists looking for a broadly cultural explanation behind their discipline.

Fire, fire everywhere
By lyndonbrecht
This is a title in Reaktion Book's "Earth" series, which I stumbled across by accident and have read all of. The publisher is British. Pyne, who is American, is probably the best known scholar of wildfire. This is not his best book but it's solid and an interesting read.
His approach may strike some readers as odd. This book is organized around the theme that fire is life--breathing is a kind of fire. Fire, says Pyne, is a product of life. Slow fire in living cells, enclosed fire in industrial processes, fires burning in forests. Without fire, no life. Sections include fires depicted; fires in history and so on. It is excellently illustrated. The illustrations are not just of wildfire, but paintings and depictions of fire--hellfire, fire as a force of nature, fire on the home hearth. This book considers cultural understandings of fire such as metaphor and legend, as well as fire being a phenomenon of nature.
Pyne is a fine writer and the topic is oddly interesting, although readers looking for a history of fires or how fires are fought will not find the book as interesting as people interested in things like the use of iconic images in the arts would. He does cover famous fires such as the famous Chicago fire, but as one part of several.
This is an interesting read, but I found it somewhat less satisfying than other books in the series, and especially not as good as other books by Pyne. I think it may be because he overdoes the fire-is-life trope. His point is well worth reading about, because I suspect, most people don't really think about the similarities of the fire in their own lungs and the fire in their car's engine.

Great book about culture and anthroprogenic fire history. How fire has followed us through history and evolved with us. Worth the read.

Good read.

Basic good read for non-fire thinkers. Covers the range and history of fire in snapshots. Did not spark any insight or passion.
